History of the Lactobacillus
Biologist Elias Metschnikoff laid the cornerstone of modern knowledge about the effects of lactobacilli and probiotics in the early 20th century.
Metschnikoff largely explored the question why the measured life expectancy of the Bulgarian rural population was statistically higher than that of other rural populations. He discovered that the answer laid in the daily consumption of fermented milk products as well as other lactic acid products.
